The strawberry is a symbol of Love and Friendship in the Cherokee Culture. It's also a reminder not to quarrel or argue. Mrs. Davenport's classes had the opportunity to visit with Ms. Olivia Jorgensen from the Cherokee Nation Education Department. Ms. Olivia talked with the students about the cultural significance of the strawberry. She also taught them how to use everyday items to extract the DNA from the strawberry. The students enjoyed the hands-on experience and were able to discuss different parts of the plant cell that they had previously learned in class. Thank you Cherokee Nation and Ms. Olivia for this fun experiment and learning expansion opportunity.

On a more serious note, S.W.A.T would like to share some information about vaping and how dangerous it can be for our students and our loved ones. Nicotine can impair the development of our brains. Vaping contains cancer-causing chemicals and heavy metals. Vaping can cause throat irritation and worsen respiratory conditions. Please read the attached poster to learn more about the dangers of vaping and encourage others to just stay no! For more information about vaping, please visit https://stopswithme.com/
Briggs Student Wellness Action Team (S.W.A.T.) focuses on healthy eating, physical activity, avoiding tobacco and ways to fight against temptations that may be harmful to the health of others.
This month S.W.A.T. is showcasing some sneaky ways to "disguise" healthy veggies in meals and a recipe to make sweet potato biscuits. They have also shared a fun Winter Wonderland Scavenger Hunt. If we see some of our Briggs kiddos out and about dancing around and waving their arms in the air when they see holiday inflatables...we will know you read this post! Stay tuned for more healthy living and snack ideas!

Mrs. Davenport's 5th grade Science class participated in the Egg Drop challenge just before Thanksgiving Break. Students were given the task to design a container that would protect an egg from breaking when dropped off the roof from 30 ft onto gravel. They had to brainstorm different types of ways to insulate their containers to give their egg the best chance of passing the test! Students tested their containers and announced their results with a thumbs up or a thumbs down!
On December 4th, our Gifted and Talented students participated in a hands-on activity with Ozobots. Ozobots are little robots that are designed as an introduction to coding. Students learned to use color combinations to move the Ozobot on a path from one location to another. A big thank you to Olivia Jorgensen from Cherokee Nation for this fun opportunity for our GT kiddos!
